Lactose Sensitivity? How To Get More Calcium In Your Diet To Benefit Oral Health

When you are lactose intolerant, you might show signs of diarrhea and bloating after you consume a glass of milk. Calcium is essential for your teeth as well as maintaining healthy blood pressures. Adults should consume approximately 1,000mg daily. If you are lactose intolerant, that figure is dependent on products that don't contain lactose.

Foods with Calcium but no Lactose

  • Canned Salmon: Salmon can be used for a sandwich, salad, or pasta dish and provides calcium from the bones as well as a high degree of omega-3 fatty acids. You can receive 290 milligrams of calcium from a ½ cup serving of salmon. You need to leave the bones in the mix by crushing them entirely before you use them because that is the source of the calcium. This is approximately the same as 6 ounces of milk.
  • Kale: More than 150 mg of calcium is provided by kale per 100 grams compared to 125 mg of milk. For the maximum nutritional value, it should be steamed for 5 minutes.
  • White Beans: If you eat one cup of white beans you can receive 19% of your required daily amounts of calcium.
  • Figs for the Sweet Tooth: Even though you can have dried figs anytime, the fresh ones provide a specific texture and taste. The Ficus tree produces a fruit that was used as a sweetener before the invention of refined sugars. One cup of dried figs can provide 24% of your daily intake needed for calcium.
  • Various Other Fruits: You have to use caution with acidic foods by using proper care before and after you consume them. You can feed the calcium chain with blackberries, grapefruit, oranges, blueberries, raisins, prunes, bananas, and many more.
  • Go Nuts: One cup of almonds can provide 378 mg of calcium which is the biggest producer of calcium in the nut family. Brazil nuts are a close runner-up at 213 mg per cup.

Read the Labels

Unfortunately, many products sold at the market aren't lactose-free. You will probably find yourself reading labels which include salad dressings, sauces, baked goods, and many others. You aren't alone if you suffer from lactose intolerance. By the age of 20, approximately 30 million individuals have the problem in the United States.

You can benefit from eating the above products and remain intact with the amount of calcium to keep your teeth healthy and strong. However, you need to protect your teeth by waiting approximately 30 minutes after eating before you brush. Brushing any sooner can further weaken the teeth because the food has applied a damaging layer of acid.

FAQs About Pregnancy and Dental Health

During pregnancy, expectant mothers have to deal with a host of changes to their bodies. I was surprised to learn that part of those changes is to your dental health. I was not aware that hormonal changes could mean an increased risk of gum infection and other dental problems. Luckily for me, my dentist was prepared to handle any problems that I experienced during my pregnancy. I created this blog to help other expectant mothers understand the changes that their dental health could experience throughout their pregnancies and the possible ramifications those changes could have on their pregnancies and the health of their unborn children.
